Incision-free Surgery

This is a new completely incision-free outpatient procedure that helps you feel full sooner by helping your body recognize when you have had enough food– without major surgery and weeks of recovery time.
The procedure is performed using a modified gastroscope  through which placation stitches are placed in the wall of the stomach . This reduces the size of the fundus of the stomach.

Patients having the procedure on a Friday could be back at work by Monday with no bandages or pain. Many patients keep the POSE procedure a secret from their friends or co-workers. Because there are no visible scars or bandages, no one needs to know that you have had the procedure, and you can be back to normal activities within a few days.

What are the potential benefits of a procedure such as POSE?
The POSE procedure is performed inside the stomach through the mouth, not through incisions into the abdomen. By eliminating incisions into the abdomen, the procedure can provide important advantages, including a reduced risk of infection and associated complications, minimised pain, shorter hospital stays, no visible external scars and faster recovery times.

How does it work?
The consultant uses special instruments to create folds in the stomach, in order to reduce the amount of food it can hold, so you will feel full faster and eat less. Suturing the stomach and using special tissue anchors to hold the folds in place may also reduce hunger between meals. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.

Who is eligible for POSE?
People most suitable for the POSE procedure are those in the lower BMI range of 28 to 40kg/m2.  Potential candidates for the POSE procedure will undergo a comprehensive assessment by the multi-disciplinary bariatric team including medical history as well as nutritional and dietary evaluations in order to determine if they are suitable for the procedure.

How long is the hospital stay?
The consultant will determine the length of hospital stay however; most people are discharged on the same day of the procedure. In some cases, it may be necessary to stay overnight for observation.

How quickly will I lose weight?
You will begin a very important diet program the day following the POSE procedure. Usually, most people say they feel less hungry and fuller faster immediately after the procedure. As less is eaten, the body will stop storing excess calories and start using its fat energy supply. As with all diets, the amount of weight loss and the speed at which it is lost will be influenced by how well the diet is followed in conjunction with exercise guidelines.

Is it safe?
As with any endoscopic procedure, there are risks involved which will be discussed with you  Some people will experience a temporary sore throat and nausea following the procedure

What is the recovery process?
Most people will return to normal activity within a few days of the procedure and the consultant will provide specific instructions. In addition, you will be required to follow a post-procedure diet and exercise plan, similar to the regime prescribed following other weight loss surgeries. You will be followed up and monitored regularly by the bariatric team to ensure that you get the most benefit from the POSE procedure.
