
Mr Akhtar is a Consultant Surgeon with special interest in Advanced Laparoscopic and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Salford Royal Foundation Hospital, which is a University teaching Hospital. He performs large numbers of complex stomach and oesophageal surgery in his NHS and Private Practice.
Mr Akhtar has interest in Obesity Surgery and has had training for it both in England and abroad, and specialises in advanced laparoscopic surgery. He performs Gastric Band and Bypass operations using keyhole techniques. Mr Akhtar has had most of his postgraduate surgical training in the North West of England. In pursuit of his specialist interest he has been to specialist centers in Japan and the United States of America. He completed his post graduate research at the Manchester University and was awarded degree of Doctor Of Medicine (MD) in 2000.
He has been working as consultant surgeon in the Pennine NHS Trust since 2000. He has clinical sessions in Rochdale Infirmary and North Manchester General Hospital. In addition to stomach and oesophageal cancer surgery Mr Akhtar routinely performs laparoscopic operations such as laparoscopic hernia surgery, cholecystectomy, anti-reflux surgery and splenectomy.
