Leading consultant Khurshid Akhtar used keyhole surgery to carry out a laparoscopic oesophagectomy, which involves the removal of the gullet.A groundbreaking gastro-intestinal operation has been performed at Rochdale Infirmary for the first time. Using four to five 1cm incisions on the stomach and chest, Mr Aktar performed the procedure on cancer patient Kenneth Neilson. The operation is usually performed due to cancer in the oesophagus.
